Letters from Germany.

I'm spending 2026–27 in Germany on the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange. Every week I write a letter home to my family in Russian. These are English translations, newest first, and each one has the original Russian underneath. Private details, like parts about my family, are left out and marked […].

Bilbao and Spiekeroog

Hi everyone!

I hope everyone is doing well and is healthy. I'm doing well; the second week of vacation is starting. Last week I was in Spain […]. The city of Bilbao is very beautiful, and I enjoyed it enormously. Also, on the way back I had a 7-hour layover in Munich, and I was able to meet up with […]. We walked around the city and ate a sandwich.

This week I'm on vacation with my family on a small island in the North Sea. The island is called Spiekeroog. It's a lot like the Cape, but here it's windy and cold. There isn't much to do on the island, but you can get a good rest.

Next week, back to school.

I wish everyone all the best.

Yours,
Tomer Brook

First exam, first skate

Hi everyone,

I hope everyone is doing well and that the week went smoothly and quickly. My week went calmly and also quickly. On the weekend we relaxed and hung out with friends.

This week I had my first math exam. I think I did okay, but we'll find out soon. This week is my "brother's" birthday. The 14th, […]. We'll celebrate with the family on Wednesday and then with friends on Saturday.

Next week I have vacation. I can't wait. The day before yesterday I opened the ice skating season. There's a rink not far from my house, and I skated for a whole two hours. If I'm not mistaken, I'm the first in the family this season.

Yours,
Tomer Brook

Weimar and Stuttgart

Hi everyone,

I hope everyone is doing well. […]

I also traveled a lot last week. I only had one day of school, on Monday, and then my class went to Weimar. It was very beautiful there, and we saw Goethe's house and also visited the Buchenwald concentration camp. Unfortunately, very few of the original buildings are left. But it was interesting to study it all again and see it. Then we were at the castle where Martin Luther hid from the church (Wartburg).

On this trip I got to be better friends with my classmates.

On Friday there was no school, and I relaxed with my brother. We went to the gym and worked out.

On Saturday morning I took the high-speed train to Stuttgart for Oktoberfest. It was incredible, and I really enjoyed it. I even bought a traditional outfit. I can send photos separately to anyone who wants them (write to me). I got home last night and started the new week today.

I wish everyone a good week and good luck in everything!

Yours,
Tomer Brook

Cologne and Belgium

Hi everyone,

I hope everyone is doing well and that Yom Kippur went peacefully. I'm doing well, and school is going great. I have friends, I understand some things in class, and I'm doing sports. This week I biked to school every day (7 km).

Yesterday I was in Cologne. It's a very beautiful city, and it reminds me of the difference between Boston and New York. It's 30 minutes by train, and very comfortable. I walked around and ate on the Rhine.

Today my family and I went to Belgium (a new country for me) to a Sunday market. We visited the town of Aubel in Val-Dieu (the Valley of God), an hour's drive from Düsseldorf. The town was very beautiful, and we had coffee there and bought cheese and bread.

Next week my class is going to the city of Weimar for 3 days. There we'll visit the Buchenwald concentration camp, and also the castle where Martin Luther wrote his famous text.

I wish everyone a good week! Write!

Yours,
Tomer Brook

Rosh Hashanah and a new school

Good morning, everyone!

Shana tova! Happy New Year. I wish everyone health, luck, fun days and happiness. As I understand it, everyone celebrated the New Year very well. I also celebrated the New Year well, at the local Chabad. At this Chabad almost everything is the same as back home, only there are fewer people here (logically). I met the rabbi, and they were very happy that I, from America, decided to come to them for Shabbat. The prayers are all the same (also logical). Then there was a holiday meal, and everything was like back home. I sat at the young adults table. There were twins from my school there, whom I already knew. They introduced me to the rest of the table... everything just like back home.

On Monday I went to school. It's a very big school, but it's interesting to see the difference between school in America and here. I have good subjects, and it's very interesting to listen to lessons taught in German. I already understand almost everything in class, and I'm gradually figuring out how to ask and answer questions. The kids in class are very friendly, and I have no problems with that.

I hope everyone is doing well. Write and call!

Moving to Düsseldorf

Hi everyone,

I'm writing to you from a new city: Düsseldorf. Yesterday was my favorite day in Germany... so far. In the morning we packed our things and took the train to the station. There we all said goodbye and got on our trains going in different directions. The trains here are very comfortable and fast, and they're very rarely late. I really love trains (in case you didn't know), so I really enjoyed my trip. The ride from Hamburg to Düsseldorf takes 3 hours by train. I was supposed to arrive at 15:22, but I arrived at 14:20. Everything's fine, and my family met me on the platform.

Last week we finished our language lessons and walked around Hamburg one last time. This city really amazed me, and I'll definitely come back. My family is very nice; they were waiting for me and gave me a happy welcome. I have my own room, and we live in a decent neighborhood. Yesterday they had a barbecue night, and it really reminded me of our evenings. Today we rode around the whole city... by bike. It's very beautiful and calm here. Tonight we're going to the movies to see a film in German.

Tomorrow is my first day of school. We'll see!

Love you all,
Tomer Brook

The end of summer

Hi everyone,

I hope everyone had a good week and a great summer. Unfortunately, our summer is already over. This week it was cloudy, and I wore a jacket in the mornings and evenings. But during the day the temperature gets up to 20 degrees Celsius. I've already switched to the metric system!

This week we were very busy. We had classes every day, and they didn't give us much time to rest. On Thursday they took us to a museum where tours are given in complete darkness. The guides are blind, and the whole point of the museum is to show how blind people live. It was interesting, but I am grateful that I do not live like that. Yesterday our group went to the city of Bremerhaven and visited the climate museum. There we walked through all the climate zones of the world, from the desert to the Arctic, and enjoyed the cool air conditioning. Also yesterday, we watched the sunset in Hamburg from the viewing platform of the city's Philharmonic building. The view was very beautiful.

Next week we'll finish our classes and leave for our families on Sunday. My studies are going well, and I'm gradually memorizing more phrases and sentences. Yesterday on the train I sat next to some women who were speaking Russian, and we got to talking... so my Russian is doing fine!

I wish everyone a good week and a good start to the school year, or to the rest of the work year. Write to me and send photos.

Always yours,
Tomer Brook

The North Sea and Lübeck

Hi everyone,

And so my second week in Germany has come to an end. Everything is good so far, and I've fully settled into the routine of the new country. School is going well, and I can already tell someone how to find a place in the city and how to get there.

Since we're much farther north than Boston, it's already getting cool here, and in the evenings you can wear a jacket. This climate is a lot like our fall in New England.

Yesterday our group went to the North Sea, to the town of Cuxhaven in Lower Saxony. It's a resort town, almost like Sunny Isles, with apartments on the sea and lots of entertainment. But the weather is very different. There you can only swim for two weeks in July, and then it gets cold because of the wind (the water stays warm until August). The town is known for being in a unique place. It's on the shore of the Wattenmeer. It's a German national park that is in the sea. At low tide, the water there goes out 10 km. This opens up a huge area where you can walk. They took us on a tour of the sea floor and showed us different sea animals.

I also traveled with the guys to the city of Lübeck. It's on the Baltic Sea, about an hour by train from Hamburg. We walked around, climbed a tower and had lunch. The city is in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, and it used to be a big trading city.

Yesterday for dinner I took all my guys to a Georgian restaurant. We ate more than 25 khinkali and two whole khachapuri. The owner was very surprised that Americans eat Georgian food. Then we went to an amusement park and had a great time (like in Sharon).

My style is slowly changing, and I already bought a European jacket in the city. I'll have to get a haircut soon. We'll see how that goes.

Love you all,
Tomer Brook

Week 1 in Hamburg

Hi everyone!

Today my first week in Germany comes to an end. So far everything is good. I'm learning a lot of new things, and I can already order food at a restaurant in German.

There are a lot of good kids in my group. I've made friends with many of them, and we're having a great time in the new city.

On weekdays we get up in the morning and take the subway to school, across from the Philharmonic building. After school, at one in the afternoon, we get free time until dinner. We use this time to get to know the city better. We've already walked around the whole old town (Altstadt), and yesterday we visited the St. Pauli district.

[…]

This letter can be forwarded to anyone who is interested in my trip.

Love you all,
Tomer Brook
